Detour
There are big orange signs going up the hill towards our street, directing traffic to a DETOUR route.
They drive up the hill.
They drive past the Detour signs, and the "Local Access" sign.
There are many u-turns.
And there are some who even drive into the construction work area opening for crew trucks before they make their u-turn.

clouds
There was a dreary downpour of rain when I drove Inday to work this morning. By the time I drove Nate to school at 7:30, the sky had lightened and the rain had turned into a drizzle.
During my walk a little later, I looked up and saw the wonderful painted ceilings in old palaces and museums I visited in Europe. Even with the dark grays of the rain clouds, it was beautiful.
I saw the fishermen were out again when I rounded the bend.
When I looked up at the sky again, the grays were giving way to the blues.

Actually, I think the temp was in the low 40s yesterday morning. It just felt colder. I am definitely not looking forward to this winter. The winter before last, when we originally anticipated being back in Cebu, after the housing market went down the toilet, was difficult. I wanted to be back in that tropical weather. Last winter wasn't too bad, but once again, I'm longing for that Cebu climate. If everything goes according to plan, we will be packing up around this time next year. We'll see...
I had to cut my walk down to 20 minutes this morning. Too many todos today.
The pinks are still running, and they're still catching them along the Green River. One guy came up from the river when I was walking by with an 18 incher!

A few weeks ago.
This morning.I enjoy walking on Saturday and Sunday mornings because there is less traffic, and it's quieter. I often walk along the road above our house on these days. They've been doing a lot of construction recently, expanding the roadway and putting in sidewalks I think (hope). With the deciduous trees slowly losing their leaves, our house is beginning to peek through below, and it's been fun watching this transition.
Today's photo above is an office building along the Green River, where I turn back towards my house after walking down the above mentioned road.

I can imagine walking over to Club Ultima and going for a swim, and working out in the fitness center, both with those magnificent views. But I wonder how my walks outside will change, with the tropical climate and sunshine, the urban city life of Cebu. A short Jeepney ride, and I could be in the hills overlooking Cebu, or I could go to one of the new developments down by the water, or just go on one of those city walks I did the very first time I visited Cebu. With the people, jeepneys, vendors, sounds, colors and smells that I so miss and look forward to...
Old Man Walking
I remember this old guy out walking in our neighborhood, every morning, after we moved into our house many years ago. He was always out there walking, regardless of the the weather, no matter the season. He had this angry, cantankerous old man look on his face as he trudged along, and as he got older, his pace slowed. I remember cheering him on in my mind when I drove by on my way to work.
One day I noticed he was walking with a cane, and his gait and rhythm had changed. His angry look seemed more determined, and I imagined him fighting off death.
After a while, a second cane appeared, and the fight continued. With the two canes, it reminded of the hikers I've seen with "walking sticks", only more fragile and halting.
The days when he didn't make it out became more frequent, and then he was gone. I don't remember him changing from the canes to a walker. I just remember the realization that he wasn't out there anymore.
I miss him.

I like walking outdoors, and I'm even enjoying the cooler temperatures, cold fingertips and all. It felt colder than what the weather report said (low 40s f). Today's Green River walk was very different from yesterday, when I did one loop inside the Southcenter Mall before going outside and walking the perimeter. I took the silver mannequin photo when I was in the Mall. I never know what route I will choose, whether I will drive somewhere, or just start walking out my front door. I do know that I will walk...
